KEIKO ABE is Professor in the Department of Applied Biological Sciences at the Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo (Japan). She was a Researcher at Duke University (USA) and a Research Associate at the Ochanomizu University (Japan) before joining the University of Tokyo in 1984. Prof. Abe was appointed a Postdoctoral Fellow, a Lecturer and subsequently an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo. She is a member of the Agricultural Chemical Society of Japan as well as the Japan Societies of Nutritional and Food Science; Biochemistry; and Molecular Biology. Prof. Abe is also a member of the Japanese Association for the Study of Taste and Smell. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. Food biochemistry, molecular and cell biology involving taste signaling are among her special research interests. She has over 200 original and review papers to her credit.
GERARD BARRY joined the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) (The Phillipines) in 2003 as the Coordinator of the Golden Rice Network. He also holds positions as the HarvestPlus Rice Crop Team Leader, and Head of IRRI's Intellectual Property Management Unit. Prior to joining IRRI, Dr. Barry spent more than 20 years with Monsanto Company (USA), where he had various responsibilities, including Co-head of the Rice Business Team, Head of the Rice Genome and Rice Genomics projects, and Director of Research for Developing Country Research Cooperation. He received a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. from University College (Ireland), and a Ph.D. from Columbia University (USA). Dr. Barry was formerly Charge de Recherche at the Institut Pasteur (France). Dr. Barry is also named as a co-inventor under 20 patents and as a co-author of more than 50 research articles. He is a frequent invited speaker at international conferences.
SAKARINDR BHUMIRATANA is the President of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) (Thailand). Dr. Bhumiratana is also a Scientific Director of ILSI Southeast Asia Region. Prior to his current appointment at NSTDA, Dr. Bhumiratana was Senior Vice President of King Mongkut’s University of Technology (KMUTT) (Thailand) and Director of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Thailand). Dr. Bhumiratana also initiated the Chemical Engineering Practice School, the Constructionism–Chemical Engineering Practice School, the Food Engineering Practice School and the Bioinformatics Program at KMUTT. He was also President of the Food Science and Technology Association (Thailand). His current research interests include systems biology, biogas research and development, transport properties of food materials and algal technology. Dr. Bhumiratana received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and was subsequently a Postdoctoral Project Associate under the supervision of Prof. R.B. Bird (1975-1976). In 1971, he was the recipient of the University Gold Medal from the University of California, Davis (USA).
SUSHILA CHANG is Senior Director of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore) and Director of the School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She is also a Scientific Director of ILSI Southeast Asia Region, a member of the ILSI Committee on Biotechnology, as well as a Trustee on the ILSI Board of Trustees. In addition, Dr. Chang is a member of the Applied Life Sciences Advisory Committee of the Institute of Technical Education (Singapore), Chemical Process Training Centre Advisory Committee, Economic Development Board Chemical Industries Manpower Committee and Ngee Ann Polytechnic Senate, among others. She was also Chairman of the Biotechnology Honors Program at the University of Queensland (Australia). Dr. Chang received her Ph.D. in Cellular Biology and Toxicology from the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris V (France) and the Laboratory of Cellular Biology and Toxicology at the University of Paris VII (France). Dr. Chang was a French Government Postgraduate Scholar, was awarded a French Government Fellowship and a British Council Fellowship. In 2002, Dr. Chang received the Excellence in Research and Innovation Award from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
HENG LENG CHEE is a Senior Research Fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore (Singapore). She was a co-author of the World Health Organization (WHO) Report on “Genomics and World Health” (2002). Her research interests are in community health, women’s health and healthcare policy. Her publications include the monographs “Health and Health Care in Malaysia : Present Trends and Implications for the Future” (1990) and “Amidst Affluence : A Study of an Urban Squatter Settlement and its Access to Health Care Services” (1995).
JUNSHI CHEN is the Executive Director of ILSI Focal Point in China. For more than 40 years, he has conducted research in the areas of nutrition and food safety at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (China). Dr. Chen is a member of several advisory bodies to the Ministry of Health (China), including cancer, diabetes and food safety. Dr. Chen serves as a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) / WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JEFCA). He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University (USA).
LYNNE COBIAC is the Research Leader for Protective Foods and Business Manager in Preventative Health, a new multi-disciplinary Flagship initiative within CSIRO (Australia) for which she was instrumental in securing the strategy and funding. Dr. Cobiac’s early scientific research focused
on the areas of nutrition and nutritional biochemistry. Her other research areas include consumer science, iron deficiency, cross-cultural differences in nutritional intakes, aging and gastrointestinal health. She has also held senior management committee membership positions at CSIRO and academic positions at Flinders University (Australia). Dr. Cobiac was Editor of the Australian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics for several years. A qualified clinical dietitian, Dr. Cobiac obtained a Ph.D. focusing on n-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular risk factors. She also holds an Advanced MBA.
SHAUN COFFEY is Chief of CSIRO Livestock Industries (Australia). Dr. Coffey joined CSIRO in 1995 and became Chief of Livestock Industries in 2000. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2004, Dr. Coffey was elected to the Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the University of Queensland (Australia). Dr. Coffey was formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Cattleman's Union of Australia, a major grower organization, as well as Regional Director and Director of Research and Extension at the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (Australia). Dr. Coffey has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists for several years, where he was Vice President from 1997 to 2002. He holds an agriculture science degree and a research M.AgrSc. in plant sciences from the University of Melbourne (Australia). He was awarded the Silver Medal by the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists in 2000 in recognition of his contributions to rural journalism.
CÉCILE DELCOURT is a Researcher at the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM) at the Laboratory for Epidemiology, Public Health and Development (France). Dr. Delcourt has been working on the epidemiology of age-related eye diseases since 1995, with particular interest in the factors related to oxidative stress and nutrition. Dr. Delcourt is the Scientific Manager of the Pathologies Oculaires Liées à l’Age (POLA) Study, a populationbased study designed to identify the risk factors for age-related macular degeneration and cataract, conducted in France. This study has contributed to the understanding of the role of smoking, light exposure, dietary antioxidants, antioxidant enzymes, lipid metabolism and protein undernutrition in the etiology of age-related eye diseases. Dr. Delcourt holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Public Health.
JAMES DEKKER is the Senior Research Scientist at Fonterra Innovation, part of Fonterra Cooperative Group Ltd (New Zealand). Dr. Dekker was formerly a Scientific Officer and the Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Hematology Research Group at the Christchurch School of Medicine (New Zealand) and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Asthma Genetics Group at the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford University (UK). Dr. Dekker received a Ph.D. in Immunology and Genetics from the Australian National University (Australia) and a B.Sc. Honors (First Class) in Genetics from Massey University (New Zealand). Immunogenetics and probiotics are some his research interests. Dr. Dekker has numerous refereed publications to his credit.
AHMED EL-SOHEMY is Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto (Canada), where he teaches undergraduate courses in Nutritional Toxicology and Functional Foods & Nutrigenomics. He also supervises graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Al-Sohemy joined the Faculty in 2000 to establish a research program in gene-diet interactions and chronic diseases. The research program is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Network Centres of Excellence, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Ontario Innovation Trust and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Dr. El-Sohemy obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Harvard School of Public Health (USA). He has published many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on molecular nutrition and has consulted for both industry and government agencies. Dr. El-Sohemy holds a Canada Research Chair in Nutrigenomics.
LAURENT BERNARD FAY joined Nestlé (Switzerland) in 1989 and is the Head of the BioAnalytical Science Department, a multicultural and multidisciplinary team whose core competence spans from analytical chemistry and biochemistry to biomathematics, bioinformatics and clinical studies. The Department aims to develop advanced tools and methodologies to support Nestlé’s research, in particular, for the Nutrition and Health Program. Dr. Fay was formerly Head of Mass Spectrometry, Head of the Food Flavor Group, Head of the Food Color Group as well as Head of the Molecular Analytics Group at Nestlé. Dr. Fay obtained a M.Sc. in Animal Physiology and Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Dijon (France). Dr. Fay has been co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and 20 proceeding articles. He is a member of the American Society of Mass Spectrometry and Honorary Member of the Swiss Group for Mass Spectrometry.
MICHAEL FENECH is the Principal Research Scientist and Project Leader for Nutrigenomics and Genome Health at CSIRO Human Nutrition (Australia). Dr. Fenech has more than 20 years of research experience in the field of genetic toxicology. He is internationally renowned for the development of the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay and its applications in genetic toxicology and nutritional research. Recently, he proposed that RDAs should be based on genomic stability, as damage to DNA is the fundamental cause for developmental and degenerative diseases. Dr. Fenech obtained a Ph.D. from Flinders University (Australia) and has authored 89 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
LYNETTE FERGUSSON is Head of the Department of Nutrition and the Centre for Mutagen Testing at the University of Auckland (New Zealand). She is also Programme Leader at the New Zealand Centre for Research Excellence in Nutrigenomics. Dr. Ferguson is Editor of Mutation Research : Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms and Mutation Research Special Issues, and sits on the editorial boards of several journals including Cell and Chromosome, Food and Chemical Toxicology, Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, among others. The overall focus of her research and her role at the Auckland Cancer Society (New Zealand) is protection against cancer, with the recent direction of work focusing on nutritional genomics and high cancer-risk inflammatory bowel disease. Specializing in genetics, Dr. Ferguson received a D.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Auckland and a Ph.D. from Oxford University (UK). In 2001, she was awarded a Personal Chair at the University of Auckland. Dr. Ferguson has over 200-refereed publications to her credit.
RODOLFO F. FLORENTINO is the Chairman-President of the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines (The Philippines) and serves as consultant to a number of national and international bodies. He is also a Scientific Director of ILSI Southeast Asia Region and the Coordinator of the Philippine Country Committee under ILSI Southeast Asia Region. Dr. Florentino is a member of the Board of Trustees of Land O’Lakes Foundation (The Philippines), a member of the Board of Directors of The Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity and the Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation. He was past President of the Philippine Association of Nutrition and served as Director of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute in The Philippines from 1984 until his retirement in 1997. He is a Fellow of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences and a member of the National Research Council of The Philippines.
SUZANNE HARRIS isthe Executive Director of ILSI. As Executive Director, Dr. Harris implements the directives of the ILSI Board of Trustees, interacts with the ILSI branches to foster collaboration and coordination and oversees the implementation of the 2003-2005 ILSI Strategic Plan. She is also the Acting Executive Director of the ILSI Research Foundation. Before joining ILSI, Dr. Harris was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Agriculture of Food and Consumer Services (USA). Dr. Harris also served at the Department of Agriculture (USA), where she assisted in the development of national nutrition and consumer policies as well as in the oversight of the Food and Nutrition Service, the Human Nutrition Information Service and the Office of Consumer Advisor. Dr. Harris holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Alabama (USA).
LIN HE is Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Nutrigenomics, Institute for Nutritional Sciences at the Shanghai Institute of Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China). He is also Director of and Professor in the Bio-X Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). An active geneticist, Prof. He has made significant contributions to the study of monogenetic and polygenetic disorders. His team first discovered that the IHH (Indian Hedgehog) gene causes brachydactyly type A-1, as well as a teeth-related novel genetic disorder. Noteworthy among his recent works was a study on the rate of adult schizophrenia among Chinese following prenatal exposure to famine. Prof. He received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Paisley (UK). He
received a Postdoctoral degree at the University of Edinburgh (UK) and was a Senior ResearchFellow at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh for over three years. Prof. He has received many international awards and has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers. His current research interests are in the areas of disease genomics, nutrigenomics, pharmacogenomics and bioinformatics.
RICHARD HEAD isa pharmacologist and Affiliate Professor in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology at the University of Adelaide (Australia). He is also Director of CSIRO Preventative Health Flagship (Australia). Prof. Head was formerly Chief of CSIRO Division of Health Sciences and Nutrition (Australia) and Chief of CSIRO Division of Human Nutrition (Australia). He has also served as Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at West Virginia University Medical Centre (USA), a Research Fellow with the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne (Australia) and Ph.D. Fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology (USA). Prof. Head is a member of numerous professional organizations and has extensive research experience. His current interests include approaches to understanding the protective action of dietary constituents on human health. Prof. Head has authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers.
HUNG THE HUYNH is Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the National University of Singapore (Singapore) and Associate Professor in the Division of Cellular and Molecular Research at the National Cancer Center (Singapore). He was Project Director at Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research (Canada), as well as Assistant Professor in the Department of Experimental Medicine at McGill University (Canada). Prof. Huynh obtained a Ph.D. from McGill University (Canada) for which he received the Dean’s First Honor List Award. He has received the Natural Scientific and Engineering Research Council Award, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command Breast Cancer Research Program Award, among others. Prof. Huynh has received 14 peer-reviewed grants from various organizations including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Canadian Cancer Research Society, U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Committee, National Scientific and Technology Board (Singapore), National Medical Research Council (Singapore), SingHealth (Singapore) and Singapore Cancer Syndicate (Singapore). His current research aims to establish the breast, prostrate and hepatocellular cancer xenografts from primary human tumors for screening drugs and targeted therapies.
UMAR JENIE is Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and a Professor of Organic Medicinal Chemistry of the Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia). Dr. Jenie is also Vice President of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee Meeting for drafting the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. He also serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Commission on Bioethics, and is a member of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council (Indonesia). Dr. Jenie received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Australian National University (Australia) and undertook Postdoctorate training and research at Osaka University (Japan), University of Newcastle (UK) and Xing-hua University (Taiwan).
CARL KEEN is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Professor of Internal Medicine at the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of California, Davis (USA). A faculty member for over 21 years, he is recognized as an Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor. Prof. Keen is a member of numerous professional organizations and has extensive experience in research and research management. His interests include the influence of diet on embryonic and fetal development and oxidative defense systems, and the study of gene-nutrient interactions among others. With more than 500 published research papers, Prof. Keen is internationally recognized and renowned for bridging basic science with applied industry needs. Prof. Keen has received many national awards for his nutrition research.
SHUHEI KOBAYASHI is Emeritus Researcher of the National Institute of Health and Nutrition (Japan). He is also Professor and Chairman in the Department of Health and Nutrition at the University of Human Arts and Sciences (Japan). Dr. Kobayashi is currently Vice President of ILSI Japan. Dr. Kobayashi also served as Chief of the Department of Health Promotion at the National Institute of Nutrition (Japan) as well as the Director General of the National Institute of Health and Nutrition. He has held other professional and academic appointments, including Research Associate in the Institute of Virus Research at Kyoto University (Japan), Research Fellow in the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at the University of Texas (USA), Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Kanazawa Medical University (Japan) and Professor in the Department of Health and Nutrition at Wayo Women’s University (Japan). Dr. Kobayashi obtained a M.D. from the Kyoto University School of Medicine (Japan) and completed Postgraduate training in the Department of Medical Chemistry at Kyoto University.
JONG-EUN LEE is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of DNA Link, Inc. (Korea). He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at LVC at the National Cancer Institute (USA). Dr. Lee was the Senior Scientist at the Cancer Research Center at the College of Medicine of Seoul National University (Korea). He was also Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Life Science Research Institute at Macrogen Inc. (Korea). Dr. Lee obtained a Ph.D. in Genetics from George Washington University (USA).
JONG HO LEE is Full Professor of Food and Nutrition at the College of Human Ecology at Yonsei University (Korea) National Research Laboratory of Clinical Nutrigenetics / Nutrigenomics. She is also Vice Director and Secretary General at the Yonsei University Research Institute of Science for Aging. In 1988, Prof. Lee received a Ph.D. from the Department of Food & Nutrition at Oregon State University (USA). She was formerly a Research Assistant at Oregon State University, a Dietetic Resident at Stanford University (USA) and a Registered Dietitian at the Sacred Heart Medical Center (USA). Prof. Lee is an Active Member of the American Dietetic Association and a Professional Member of the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. She is also the Secretary General for the Korean Society of Atherosclerosis and Lipidology and the Vice President for the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity. Prof. Lee is also a member of the Review Committee for Functional Foods of the Korea Food & Drug Administration. She is the recipient of several scientific awards and has authored and coauthored numerous research papers and publications. Nutrigenetics, medical nutrition therapy in diabetes mellitus, coronary vascular disease, dyslipidemia, hypertension and liver disease are some of her current research interests.
YUAN KUN LEE is Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (Singapore). Dr. Lee’s research areas include probiotics, food biotechnology, environmental microbiology and microbial fermentation. Dr. Lee obtained a Ph.D. from the University of London (UK). He has published 83 papers in international refereed scientific journals, contributed 29 chapters in books, authored 3 monographs and is named as inventor under 3 patents.
DONGXIN LIN is Director and Professor in the Department of Cancer Etiology and Carcinogenesis at the Cancer Institute and Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (China) and the Peking Union Medical College (China). Dr. Lin was the Visiting Scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (France). He was also a Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Scientist in the Division of Molecular Epidemiology at the National Center for Toxicological Research (USA) and Assistant Professor at Fujian Medical University. He was a medical student at the Shanghai First Medical College (China) and a medical graduate student at Beijing Medical University (China). Dr. Lin has numerous scientific publications and research papers to his credit. Molecular biology and genetic epidemiology of cancer are his specialty areas and research interests.
EDISON LIU is Executive Director of the Genome Institute of Singapore (Singapore), a flagship program of the Biomedical Sciences Initiative of Singapore integrating genomic sciences with cell and medical biology. He is also Executive Director of the Singapore Cancer Syndicate and Managing Director of the Singapore Tissue Network. His current scientific research investigates the dynamics of whole genome gene transcription that explains biological states in cancer. Dr. Liu serves as an advisor to a number of Singapore government agencies and is a member of several corporate scientific advisory boards, editorial boards and international bodies. He served as Chair of the General Motors Cancer Research Mott Awards Committee and its General Assembly and was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Association of Cancer Research. He is also the Senior Advisor to the President of the National University of Singapore (Singapore), Chair of the Strategic Committee for Clinical Research of the National Healthcare Group (Singapore), a member of Singapore’s Bioethics Advisory Committee and Biomedical Sciences Executive Committee, among others. Dr. Liu was a Leukemia Society Scholar and awards he has received include the Brinker International Award, the Rosenthal Award from the American Association for Cancer Research as well as the Public Service Medal (Singapore). Dr. Liu has contributed over 190 articles, reviews and book chapters to scientific literature.
JOHN C. MATHERS is Professor of Human Nutrition in the School of Clinical Medical Sciences at University of Newcastle (UK). He is also Director of the cross-Faculty Human Nutrition Research Centre and Principle Investigator for research projects in the areas of nutrition and the prevention of common non-transmissible diseases including colon cancer and cardiovascular disease. Prof. Mathers is the Chair for the Nutrition and Ageing Taskforce at the British Nutrition Foundation (UK) and a member of the Healthy Organism Strategy Panel of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (UK). He also works with the European Nutrigenomics Organisation (NuGO) in the areas of Human Studies and Epigenetics. Prof. Mathers was a past President of the Nutrition Society (UK) and he has been a referee for several national and international grant-awarding bodies appraising research proposals as well as a large number of academic journals. He received a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of Cambridge (UK). Prof. Mathers received the British Nutrition Foundation Prize for outstanding contributions to nutrition in 2002.
JOHN MILNER is Chief of the Nutritional Science Research Group in the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (USA). Dr. Milner is also a member of the Board of Trustees of ILSI, Chair of the World Cancer Research Fund / American Institute for Cancer Research Mechanisms Working Group and a member of the External Advisory Board for the European Commission SEAFOODplus initiative. From 1989 to 2000, he was Head of and Professor in the Department of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University (USA), where he also served as Director of the Graduate Program in Nutrition. Before joining Pennsylvania State University, he was a faculty member in the Food Science Department and the Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign (USA) for 13 years. Dr. Milner has served in an advisory capacity as a member of the Human Nutrition Board of Scientific Counselors of the Department of Agriculture (USA), the Joint Department of Agriculture (USA) / Department of Health and Human Services (USA) Dietary Guidelines Committee, and the Food, Nutrition and Safety Committee of ILSI. Dr. Milner received a Ph.D. in Nutrition from Cornell University (USA) and has published more than 320 abstracts, book chapters and journal articles.
DAVID MITCHELL is a Research & Business Leader at CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences (Australia), where he is responsible for Biotechnology & Health Informatics. Dr. Mitchell is also a member of the New South Wales BioFirst Committee (Australia), as well as the judging panel of the Eureka Prize for Bioinformatics. He joined CSIRO’s Corporate Business Development & Commercialization Team as an Investment Manager in 2002, and had formerly worked in various companies in the area of life sciences, including the Biotechnology Unit of the Vitamin and Fine Chemicals Division at F. Hoffmann-La Roche. Dr Mitchell was part of the team that completed the first genomic sequence of the Rotavirus, one of the first complete genome sequences. He received a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology from Adelaide University (Australia) and was a Swiss National Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow where he worked on rapid DNA diagnostics. Dr. Mitchell also holds a Masters degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from Swinburne University (Australia).
MICHAEL MÜLLER is a Full Professor and Chair of Nutrition, Metabolism and Genomics in the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University (The Netherlands). He is Director of the “Innovative Cluster Nutrigenomics” within the Wageningen Centre of Food Sciences (The Netherlands). Dr. Müller is also a board member of the European Nutrigenomics Organisation (NuGO). His research group studies the molecular mechanisms behind effects of fatty acids and other food components on gene expression and homeostasis, the role of inflammation and dietary stress in the early pathophysiology of metabolic stress and metabolic syndrome and the use of nutrigenomics-based early biomarkers in the prevention of nutrition-related diseases. Dr. Müller obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry for his work on Liver Drug Transporters at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg (Germany). He was formerly Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Head of the Liver Transporter Group at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands).
KATSUYA NAGAI is Vice Director and Professor in the Institute for Protein Research at Osaka University (Japan). He is also Professor in the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University. Dr. Nagai is a member of the Japanese Biochemical Society, Neuroscience Society, Chronobiology Society, International Society for Chronobiology and the Society for U.S. Neuroscience. His research interests include the molecular mechanism of the mammalian circadian clock, central regulation of food intake and energy metabolism and molecular mechanism of signal transduction in brain functions. Dr. Nagai obtained a Ph.D. from the Institute of Protein Research at Osaka University and a M.D. from the Osaka University Medical School. Dr. Nagai has contributed numerous articles and research papers to advance the science in these areas.
CHOON NAM ONG is Director of the Center of Environmental and Occupational Health Research at the National University of Singapore (Singapore). He is also Professor in the Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine (Singapore). Prof. Ong is a Visiting Professor in several top universities in China, and is a Scientific Advisor to ILSI Southeast Asia Region, an advisor to the Guangdong Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China) and has served as an advisor to the WHO. Prof. Ong was the Chairman of the International Advisory Panel on NEWater. His current research interests include cancer chemoprevention, carcinogenesis and herbal medicine. Prof. Ong has authored more than 200 scientific articles on environmental health and toxicology in international peer-reviewed journals.
BOONSONG ONGPHIPHADHANAKUL is Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University (Thailand). He is also Associate Dean for Research Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital at Mahidol University. Dr. Ongphiphadhanakul is a Thailand Research Fund Senior Research Scholar. He was also Resident in Internal Medicine and Fellow in Endocrinology at Mahidol University, as well as a Fellow in Endocrinology at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (USA). Dr. Ongphiphadhanakul has received certification in Quantitative Medical Research from Erasmus University (The Netherlands). He has authored and co-authored numerous research papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals and his research areas include osteoporosis, diabetes and body composition.
JOSE M. ORDOVAS is Senior Scientist and Director of Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory at JM USDA - Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (USA). Among his various academic appointments, Dr. Ordovas was Professor of Nutrition and Genetics and Director of Cell and Molecular Nutrition Program at Gerald J. and Dororthy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. He received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Zaragoza (Spain). His research interests include molecular biology, nutrition and genetics along with the study of lipoproteins and cardiovascular disease risk. Dr. Ordovas has authored and co-authored numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals.
WILLIAM PADOLINA is Deputy Director General for Partnerships at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) (The Philippines) with research management, science policy, technology transfer, secondary plant metabolism, biotechnology and intellectual property rights as some of his key responsibilities. Dr. Padolina was formerly the Director for External Relations of IRRI. Dr. Padolina was a Full Professor and Department Chair at the University of The Philippines Los Baños (The Philippines), Director of the Learning Resource Center (The Philippines) and Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (The Philippines). Dr. Padolina obtained his Ph.D. in Botany / Phytochemistry from the University of Texas (USA). Dr. Padolina has received several awards for his scientific contributions, among which are the Philippine Legion of Honor (Rank of Officer) and more recently, the ASEAN Meritorious Award for Science and Technology in 2005.
NINA RAUTONEN is Director of Bioscience at Danisco Innovation (Finland). Dr. Rautonen was Assistant Professor at the University of Helsinki (Finland) and has authored approximately 50 peer-reviewed publications in the area of immunology. Her research has focused on the areas of mucosal and pediatric immunology, and her most recent research emphasis has been on studies of the interactions between intestinal microbes and gut mucosa. Dr. Rautonen received a Ph.D. in Immunogenetics at the University of Helsinki.
MARTIN SCHWEIGER is a European Patent and Trademark Attorney. He is the Professional Representative before the European Patent Office and the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market and a registered foreign lawyer in Singapore. He is a member of the Law Society of Singapore, the German Attorney Bar, the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office and the German Association for Intellectual Property and Copyright Law. Mr. Schweiger completed studies in mechanical engineering at Technischen University (Germany) and undertook Postgraduate studies in electrical engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada (Canada) and the Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal (Canada). Martin Schweiger successfully accomplished legal studies for the Patent Attorney Qualifying Examination in Düsseldorf and Munich. Software patents, trademark infringements, name creation for products, services and company names and tax law questions with regard to license arrangements are his areas of expertise.
ADELINE SEOW is Associate Professor in the Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (Singapore). Dr. Seow received her medical and public health training at the National University of Singapore, where she has been conducting epidemiologic research with clinical collaborators in various hospitals since 1993. Her main research focus is gene-environment and gene-diet interactions in cancer epidemiology. Ongoing projects include studies on lung cancer among non-smoking Chinese women and on malignant lymphomas in Singapore.
DIETER SÖLL is Professor in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University (USA), a post he has held since 1967. He is also currently the Henry Ford II Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Among numerous professional affiliations, Dr. Söll was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Söll has served on the editorial boards of many publications including Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, European Journal of Biochemistry, Genomics, among others. His research interests lie in the evolution of the fundamental mechanism of protein biosynthesis and of the expansion of the Genetic Code. Dr. Söll was a Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at Durham University (UK) and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin (USA). He received a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart (Germany). Dr. Söll has written over 420 scientific publications in the fields of biochemistry, functional genomics, molecular biology, microbiology and chemistry.
E SHYONG TAI is a Consultant and Clinical Scientist in the Department of Endocrinology at Singapore General Hospital (Singapore) and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Genome Institute of Singapore - National University of Singapore Centre for Molecular Epidemiology (Singapore). He is also a Clinician Scientist at the Singapore Health Services. Dr. Tai is trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, and he has maintained a keen interest in factors that govern lipid metabolism, particularly those involving triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and highdensity lipoproteins. Dr. Tai obtained a M.D. at the University of Dundee (UK). His current research focuses on elucidating gene-environment interactions and serum lipids.
EIJI TAKEDA is Professor in the Department of Clinical Nutrition at the Institute of Health Biosciences at the University of Tokushima Graduate School (Japan). Prof. Takeda was formerly Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tokushima and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Laboratory for Experimental Oncology at the School of Medicine of Indiana University (USA). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokushima. His academic interests include clinical and molecular nutrition, prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases by nutritional care, nutrigenomics and functional food development. Dr. Takeda has received awards from the Vitamin Society of Japan as well as from the Japanese Society of Nutrition and Food Science in 1998 and 2004, respectively. Starting from 2003, Dr. Takeda has organized the 21st Century of Excellence (COE) Program entitled “Nutritional Sciences on Stress Control” which was selected and approved by the Japanese Government for a 5-year grant support. He has authored and co-authored numerous research publications in peer-reviewed journals.
E-SIONG TEE is President of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (Malaysia) and Chair of several Technical Committees of the Ministry of Health (Malaysia), including National Codex Subcommittee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses; Working Group on Nutrition, Health Claims and Advertisement; and Working Group on Food / Drug Interface Products. Dr.Tee is also a member of the National Technical Advisory Committee on Food Regulations (Malaysia) and a member of the National Coordinating Committee on Food and Nutrition (Malaysia). He is a Scientific Director and Board Member of ILSI Southeast Asia Region, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the ILSI Research Foundation. Dr. Tee served at the Institute of Medical Research (Malaysia) for 30 years until his retirement, where he was also Head of the Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Nutrition Center. His main areas of interest and research are in community nutrition, nutritional value of foods and food regulatory affairs. He has published over 150 scientific articles and papers and made over 170 presentations on various aspects of food and nutrition in national and international seminars and conferences.
VISITH THONGBOONKERD is Head of Siriraj Proteomics Facility of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University (Thailand). Dr. Thongboonkerd also serves on the Editorial Board or Editorial Advisory Panel of Clinical Science, Current Analytical Chemistry, Nephron, and Proteomics. He serves as a consultant for several ongoing proteomics projects conducted by institutes and laboratories in several countries, including USA, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain and Hong Kong. Dr. Thongboonkerd is also a member of the “Faculty of 1000 Biology – Section of Protein Chemistry and Proteomics” and the “Faculty of 1000 Medicine – Nephrology Faculty”. His research has focused on the area of Renal and Urinary Proteomics. Dr. Thongboonkerd has published several book chapters, reviews and original articles in high-impact journals mainly related to proteomics. He is the editor of a recent textbook “Proteomics in Nephrology” published by Karger. He has continued his role as an active referee for more than 20 highly prestigious international journals.
NICO VAN BELZEN is the Executive Director of ILSI Europe based in Brussels (Belgium). Before joining ILSI Europe in 2003, he worked at DMV International, the business-to-business division of Campina (The Netherlands), where he set up and managed a laboratory to develop bioactive food ingredients and subsequently became Head of the Department of Research and Analysis. Dr. van Belzen was formerly a biomedical researcher, specializing in molecular cell biology, for more than a decade in universities and academic hospitals in The Netherlands.
BEN VAN OMMEN is Head of Nutrigenomics Activities at TNO Quality of Life, one of the largest independent research organizations in the field of nutrition. Dr. van Ommen also coordinates the European Nutrigenomics Organization (NuGO), which is a EU-funded partnership of 21 universities and research institutes in the area of nutrigenomics. Since 1998, Dr. van Ommen's research group has aimed at approaching effects of nutrition and nutrition-related bioactive compounds with regard to health promotion and disease prevention on a genome-wide scale. In 2002, he was appointed Senior Research Fellow of the TNO organization in the area of nutritional systems biology. Dr. van Ommen has an academic background in biochemistry and toxicology. His Ph.D. and early research career were dedicated to molecular and biochemical mechanisms in toxicology and nutrition, including the inter-individual differences of genetic origin.
MOHAN VISHWANATHAN is President and Director of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (India). Dr Viswanathan also serves as Professor of International Health at the University of Minnesota (USA) and is Visiting Professor of Diabetology at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College (India) and University of Alabama (USA). He also oversees Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialists’ Centre as Chairman and Chief Diabetologist. Awards he has received include the Dr. B.C Roy National Award by the Medical Council (India) and the Wockhardt Award of Medical Excellence by Harvard Medical International (USA). Dr. Viswanathan has also served as a member of the WHO Working Group on Non-Communicable Diseases (Thailand) and on associations of body mass index, central obesity with risks for chronic diseases among Asian populations. He has published 390 original papers in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to over 60 textbooks on diabetes and internal medicine worldwide.
PETER WEBER is the Corporate Scientist at DSM Nutritional Products and is responsibility for the Human Nutrition & Health Department within the organization. Dr. Weber also lectures on Human Nutrition at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim (Germany). Dr. Weber had established the Food Ingredient Team of the Human Nutrition & Health Group at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd (Switzerland) in 1998. He was also the Deputy Director of the Human Nutrition Research Department (USA) and worked in the Research Institute of Child Nutrition (Germany) before training in Internal Medicine with Endocrinology as a sub-speciality at the University of Mainz (Germany). Dr. Weber received his Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Bonn (Germany) and his M.D. from the University of Münster (Germany). Among his research interests is the role of micronutrients in the prevention of diseases. He has original research publications in the field of iodine deficiency and goiter, thyroid diseases, metabolic syndrome, postprandial lipid metabolism and vitamin K.
AMAN WIRAKARTAKUSUMAH is the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (France). He is also a member of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences, National Research Council (Indonesia), Indonesian Association of Food Technologists, Indonesian Food and Nutrition Society and the Institute of Food Technologists (Indonesia). Dr. Wirakartakusumah is a member of the Board of Directors of ILSI Southeast Asia Region, as well as Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Indonesia Toray Science and Technology and International Union of Food Science and Technology. He was also the Rector of Bogor Agricultural University (Indonesia). Dr. Wirakartakusumah obtained Master and Doctorate degrees in Food Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). He has co-authored numerous national and international publications.
CHRISTOPHER WONG is a Research Scientist working on Microarray and Expression Genomics at the Genome Institute of Singapore (Singapore). He is currently setting up a High Content Screening Laboratory to facilitate high-throughput studies using cell-based assays. Dr. Wong’s research focus has been centered on developing microarray technologies to answer different biological questions, particularly in the fields of cancer and infectious disease. Dr. Wong received the AACR-Pfizer Scholar in Training Award in 2001 and a National University of Singapore / National University Hospital Young Scientist (Poster) Award in 2003. Dr. Wong received a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Music at Beloit College (USA) and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Graduate Studies from the University of Pennsylvania (USA).
GRAEME P. YOUNG heads a large research initiative at Flinders Centre for Digestive Health and Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer Care, Prevention and Research based at Flinders Medical Centre (Australia). Appointed as inaugural Professor of Gastroenterology at Flinders University (Australia), Dr. Young is also Head of Gastrointestinal Services at Flinders Medical Centre and Repatriation General Hospital (Australia). Dr. Young serves as advisor to several international research bodies including the National Cancer Institute (USA) and other organizations and biotechnology companies involved in the management of cancer. He is also the founding board member of the International Digestive Cancer Alliance. Dr. Young obtained a M.D. from the University of Melbourne (Australia). He has published many scientific papers and is senior editor on several comprehensive textbooks on the subject of bowel cancer and contributes chapters on colorectal cancer to major international textbooks on gastrointestinal medicine.
MIMI YU is a cancer epidemiologist and the McKnight Presidential Professor at the Cancer Center of the University of Minnesota (USA). Prof. Yu was Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USA) for 14 years. She was also a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Cancer Institute (USA). Prof. Yu has conducted extensive studies on diet and cancer, viral hepatitis and other risk factors for liver cancer, analgesic use and other risk factors for kidney cancer and exposure to aryl amines in bladder cancer. Her current research interest centers on the identification of cancer-protective factors in the human diet. Prof. Yu received a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Toronto (Canada), a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of California, Los Angeles (USA). Prof. Yu was the recipient of an Outstanding Investigator Award and a DCEG Special Recognition Award in 1992 and 2004, respectively, from the National Cancer Institute. Prof. Yu is an associate editor of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
